CRUZE STRANGE WINS 2011 PORT PHILLIP AMATEUR

Western Australian State Team player Cruze Strange has won the 2011 Port Phillip Amateur following the final 36-holes played at the Kingston Heath Golf Club on Sunday December 11th.

After a morning round of two-over 74 left the 22-year-old ten shots from the lead, a sensational course record of nine-under 63 saw Strange storm home to take the title with a four round total of 284 to win by one-stroke from Queensland's Daniel Nisbet on 285. Commonwealth's Geoff Drakeford finished third on 287 after a final round of 76.

Strange’s win was his first Port Phillip title and came courtesy of an amazing final round which saw him fire six birdies and two eagles to topple professional Anthony Painter's previous course record.

The Port Phillip Amateur commenced in 1976 with the 72-hole Championship played annually at Kingston Heath and Commonwealth within Melbourne’s Sand Belt. Commonwealth’s Rick Wines won the inaugural title and became the first dual winner after taking out the 1979 event.

In addition to Wines, the event also boasts former winners such as Mike Clayton (1977 & 1980), John Lindsay (1982 & 1984), Brad Hughes (1987 & 1988), Craig Spence (1994), Stephen Allan (1995), Scott Gardiner (1999), Stephen Jones (2003 & 2004), Jin Jeong (2008) and Kieran Pratt (2009).

Following the support of the Commonwealth and Kingston Heath Golf Clubs, the Victorian Amateur Championship qualifying rounds have been held in conjunction with the Port Phillip Amateur since 2008. This year's starting field of 168 players come from 88 golf clubs, highlighting the popularity of the event.

The leading 32 players with 72-hole scores of 301 or better following the completion of the Port Phillip Amateur will now progress to the match play rounds of the 103st Victorian Amateur Championship. No play-off was required to determine the final qualifiers.

The match play rounds will begin at Kingston Heath from 7.30am on Monday December 12th.   The quarter and semi-finals will then be played at Commonwealth on Tuesday December 13th with the Championship final played over 36 holes also at Commonwealth on Wednesday December 14th beginning at 7.30am.
